Programme Overview

The Knight-Wallace Fellowships offer accomplished journalists a unique opportunity to dedicate time and resources to their professional growth. Selected journalists spend an academic year at  the University of Michigan, accessing the vast resources of a world-class institution and engaging in a journalism project of their choice. Read through for the benefit, requirement, application process and the deadline.

  • Workshops to sharpen professional skills and enhance leadership abilities.
  • $85,000 stipend plus $5,000 for relocation expenses, distributed monthly from August through April.
  • Health insurance, course auditing, and required workshops and fellowship activities are fully covered.
  • Individual relocation support and assistance with securing housing tailored to each Fellow’s needs.
  • Spouses and partners are invited to participate in fellowship activities and audit university courses.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have a minimum of five years of experience in journalism and be currently working in the field, either for a news organization or as an independent journalist.
  • A diverse range of journalism professionals will be considered, including reporters, editors, data experts, visual journalists, audio producers, engagement specialists, designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and organizational change agents.
  • If not a full-time journalist, the majority of the applicant’s work must be in journalism.
  • The following are not eligible: full-time academics, public relations writers, internal trade writers, lobbyists, public advocates, and individuals seeking a degree.
  • U.S. citizens must apply as U.S. applicants, regardless of where they work or for which entity.
  • Non-U.S. citizens must apply as international applicants, even if they work in the U.S. or for an American journalism entity.
  • Green Card holders are not U.S. citizens.

Interview Dates and Process

Great care goes into assembling classes of Fellows that represent a diversity of experience, journalism speciality, geographic region and type and size of news organizations. Typically, up to six international colleagues join ten to twelve U.S. journalists. International finalists are interviewed in January and February to allow time for visa processing after selections are made. U.S. finalists are interviewed in April.
