Programme Overview

The AbbVie Immunology Scholarship is designed to provide financial support for exceptional students enrolled at an accredited United States university/college living with the following inflammatory diseases:

  • Atopic Dermatitis (AD)
  • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS)
  • Crohn’s disease (CD)
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) 
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)
  • Psoriasis (Ps)
  • Psoriatic arthritis (PsA)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC)
  • Uveitis (UV)

In addition, this is for students seeking an associates degree, undergraduate degree, graduate degree or Doctorate.

Benefits

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive:

  • Associate degree: $10,000
  • Bachelor degree: $20,000
  • Masters/PhD: $20,000

Requirements

It is not necessary for applicants to have taken, currently take, or intend to take in the future any medicine or product marketed by AbbVie; this will not be a consideration in the recipient-selection process.

Applicants to the AbbVie Immunology Scholarship must be:

  • A US citizen or a legal and permanent resident of the US
  • Diagnosed with AD, AS, CD, HS, JIA, Ps, PsA, RA, UC, or UV by a healthcare professional. (If the applicant has been diagnosed with more than one of these inflammatory diseases, the applicant should choose the most relevant inflammatory disease for this application.)
  • Current high school seniors or graduates or current postsecondary undergradtuates or graduate level students who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two-or-four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the entire 2025-2026 academic year.
  • Pursuing a Certificate or an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD Degree.

Those who do not receive a scholarship are invited to reapply in the future. Previous recipients of any AbbVie scholarships are not eligible to apply.

Interview Dates and Process

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Community Involvement
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model in the Immunology community
  • Academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school, community activities and/or work experience (if applicable)
  • Honors
  • A letter of recommendation
  • It is not necessary for applicants to have taken, currently taken or intend to take the future any medicine or product marketed by AbbVie; this will not be a consideration in recipient selection. Applicants should not include any specific brand or product names, including generic name of medications, in their submission.
  • An essay answering one of the following topics:
    1. Living with a chronic inflammatory disease can be a transformative journey, providing you with unique perspective on life. What are some of the challenges you face daily, and how does your perspective help you manage them? What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned throughout your disease journey?
    2. Navigating life with a chronic inflammatory disease can be challenging, and community support can be helpful. What does your support system look like in your own community? What role have you taken in your own community and why is that important to you personally?
    3. Education can be a powerful tool that you can use to change the world. What do you plan to do with your education? What aspects of your future excite you the most?

Application Documents

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

NOTE:  SAT or ACT test scores are not required for this scholarship, but if you are providing them and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload an official copy of those test scores separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken
  • A completed Diagnosis Verification Form. This form must be printed, completed and signed by your healthcare professional to confirm you are living with one of the aforementioned diseases. The completed form must be uploaded with your application by the application deadline. No exceptions will be permitted.
  • One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than May 5, 2025 3:00 pm Central Time. Applicants are responsible for making sure their recommender completes the form and submits a letter of recommendation by this deadline date. Note: Recommenders are given additional time after the application deadline date to complete their recommendation.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
